Entertaining Strangers The Bible for Busy People with Rev. Stephen Milton

Many of the major turning points in the Bible occur when strangers come together for a meal. In this edition of the BBP, we will look at some of these famous dinner parties to see what they reveal about how we should relate to people very different from ourselves. Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham and the three angels, Jesus dining with sinners, Peter seeing forbidden gentile foods in a vision, Paul taking Christianity to the gentiles, who we eat with makes a huge difference in our faith, and our vision of the world.

The book focusses on the world's highest concentration of people over the age of 100, who can be found on the island of Okinawa in Japan. They are lively, active people, who seem much younger than their chronological age. What's their secret? You are encouraged to read or listen to the book before the 23rd, then join us for a presentation on the book's findings, and see some video clips of the extremely old but active people who live in Okinawa, who have found their Ikigai, their purpose for living and thriving.

The Bible for Busy People - Jesus and Judas

In the next BPP, we will be looking at the relationship between Judas and Jesus. Judas was a trusted disciple, the treasurer, and yet he is the one who betrays Christ to the authorities and makes the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus possible. He has been seen as the world’s worst traitor, and also as someone who was serving the will of God. His story raises questions of betrayal, sin, and the possibility of forgiveness. All are welcome to join in this session, no prior reading required.

Book Discussion - "Falling Upward"

Book by Richard Rohr and discussion facilitated by Rev. Stephen Milton

Wednesday, February 15 from 7:30 - 9:00 pm

Most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the thesis of this book is exactly the opposite. What looks like falling down can be experienced as ''falling upward'' in a spiritual, psychological sense. Rohr argues that in the second half of life we really start to understand what life is about , who we are, and what we can give to ourselves and the world to be fully realized people. But few know this path is possible in our modern world that values youth above all else. Join Stephen as we discuss this book together

Bible for Busy People: Forgiveness

Rev. Stephen Milton leads an online class called Bible for Busy People. This session is on the topic of Forgiveness. Forgiveness is considered a key to Christian faith, and something which we all need to practice in our daily lives. But actually forgiving, really wiping the slate clean can be very difficult. In this session of the BBP, we will look at scripture passages and stories where God urges us to forgive, and explains how to do it. If you've ever needed to forgive someone, this session is for you.

Anti-Black racism in Ontario schools frequently channels Black students into detentions, suspensions and incarceration at a much higher rate than among other students. On January 25th we will explore this issue by screening the short new documentary  "The School to Prison Pipeline in Ontario," followed by a discussion.

Hosted at Lawrence Park Community Church.
