“What Went Wrong? Toronto’s Inadequate Welcome to African Refugees”

This summer, asylum seekers arrived in Toronto from all over Africa, but found there was no place for them to stay. The City’s shelter system denied them entry, so they started camping out at 129 Peter Street, the shelter intake centre. Why did Toronto have no room, and why have churches had to step in to provide shelter? Join us on November 28th for an online discussion of what went wrong, and what needs to go right in the months ahead. We’ll hear from three people who have been directly involved in the crisis, representing the City’s shelter system, the Black churches who have provided shelter, and an expert who has been helping the Africans find housing, with a background in refugee issues. There will be plenty of time for Q&A.
